With a focus on vocal repertoire from the early baroque, Renaissance, and modern eras, the versatile Early Music Ensemble strives for cogent performance excellence in vocal music across this vast temporal span. The group frequently collaborates with composition faculty and department ensembles, from the Percussion Studio to the Baroque Ensemble.

Barefoot Chamber Concerts
“Andrew & Anthony play the 3 Bs” Anthony Martin, violin & Andrew Canepa, piano, perform Bach, Gavotte, arr. Kreisler: Beethoven, C Minor Sonata; and Brahms, G Major Sonata. Two of our favorite players, Anthony Martin, violin, and Andrew Canepa, piano, play legendary sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms, and an additional snack by Bach arranged by Fritz Kreisler. Kreisler has provided a late-Viennese piano accompaniment to Bach’s Gavotte in E from the Third Violin Partita. No mean pianist, and a skillful composer, Kreisler was also perhaps the most beloved violinist of the early 20th century. The turbulent Sonata in C Minor of Beethoven follows, then calm is restored with the first movement of Brahms’ beloved Sonata in G. All in the fabulous wooden acoustic of the Hillside Urban Sanctuary (aka Swedenborgian Church). There will, of course, be snax.

Junior Bach Festival
64th annual Junior Bach Festival opens. The Junior Bach Festival is dedicated to touching young lives by promoting the study and performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Presented annually about the time of Bach’s birthday, March 21, the Festival features in concert some of the finest young musical talent in California (ages 6 to 18), chosen by audition. Tickets are $17 general admission, $12 Seniors, $5 for students 12 and under, except where noted. We offer FAMILY PACKAGE, where ALL family members (parents, siblings and grandparents) may attend a single concert for $50. Tickets are available onsite at concerts. More concert details at www.juniorbach.org. Performances are scheduled the weekends of March 17–19 and March 24–26. Ten concerts (all different) at venues around the Bay Area feature young people performing works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Bach, Mendelssohn, Herzogenberg, and Brahms.The highlight of the program will be Bach’s motet Jesu, meine Freude, one of his most beloved a cappella compositions. Other works on the program show Bach’s profound influence on music of the 19th century: English canticles by Felix Mendelssohn; the composer-conductor credited with the modern Bach revival; contrapuntal motets by Johannes Brahms; and a setting of Psalm 116 by Heinrich Herzogenberg.

Voices of Music—10th-Anniversary Celebration
“Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Motets by Scarlatti and Vivaldi” Join SFEMS and the Bay Area’s early music community in celebrating the 10th anniversary of one of our region’s most distinguished ensembles, just honored with the 2017 Laurette Goldberg Award for lifetime achievement in early music outreach. For their tenth anniversary celebration, Voices of Music, Hanneke van Proosdij and David Tayler, Directors, presents a dazzling display of sacred vocal music, including motets by Vivaldi and Alessandro Scarlatti, and featuring Pergolesi’s signature work, the Stabat Mater. From the Netherlands, soprano Stefanie True makes her Voices of Music debut; Stefanie is joined by the fabulous Meg Bragle for these performances of Pergolesi’s masterpiece. Violinist Cynthia Miller Freivogel also returns from Amsterdam. Other performers include Kati Kyme, Carla Moore, Maxine Nemerovski and Gabrielle Wunsch, violins; Lisa Grodin, viola; Bill Skeen, cello; Farley Pearce, violone; David Tayler, archlute; and Hanneke van Proosdij, organ. A co-presentation of SFEMS and Voices of Music.

Singers’ Retreat
Weekend workshop for singers, studying and performing works of Renaissance polyphony, directed by Dr. William Mahrt. We have often sung the ordinary of the mass in the Renaissance Singers’ Retreat, that is the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Angnus Dei. With this retreat, however, Prpfessor Mahrt has chosen to sing the propers of the mass which include those scriptural texts of the mass that change daily with the liturgical calendar and include the Introit, Gradual, Alleluia or Tract, Sequence, Offertory and Communion. We will sing works by many of the great composers of this era including Dufay, Isaac, Josquin, Byrd, Victoria, Morales and Lassus. Continuous snack table included.

South Bay Recorder Society
“Music of Chapel, Court, and Stage” Spring Workshop directed by David Morris. An exploration of three distinct traditions of music from 16th- and 17th century Europe: instrumental and vocal music from the Protestant and Catholic churches; the expressive, chromatic madrigals of northern Italy and the Low Countries; Purcell’s music for the Restoration theater. Workshop participants may choose between all-day (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM) or half-day sessions, 9:30 AM–12:15 or 1:15–4:00 PM. In addition to recorders, all soft instruments (viols, soft reeds) are welcome. Please bring your instruments, music stand, and your lunch. Hot and cold beverages and snacks will be provided during breaks.
