Barefoot Chamber Concerts presents The Barefoot AllStars
“The Most Famous Man in All The World—Fantasies and Dances by Alfonso Ferrabosco II” This concert will be a special treat: the eponymous Barefoot AllStars (Peter Hallifax, Julie Jeffrey, Adaiha McAdam-Somer, David Morris and Lynn Tetenbaum, viols), the viol consort you all know and love, brings you music by the composer they all know and love best (well, one of them, at least), the amazing Alfonso Ferrabosco II. Not really a household name in the twentieth century, Ferrabosco straddled the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline courts and created unequalled works. His amazing (and fully chromatic) hexachord fantasies are simply way ahead of their time, and his many gorgeous 5 part pavans, including the famous “Dovehouse Pavan,” “Sharp Pavan” and “Four Note Pavan,” set the standard for harmonic richness that only Lawes came to equal. This concert will be feature all these iconic works, together with other fantasies and dances. All this in the fabulous wooden acoustic of the Swedenborgian Hillside Church. There will, of course, be snax. Please note, special location and time.

“Annus Novus: One Yeare Begins—Medieval Poetry, Music & Magic to Ring in the New Year” The “elegant, full-blooded” singing of Vajra Voices (Allison Zelles Lloyd, Amy Stuart Hunn, Cheryl Moore, Lindsey McLennan Burdick, Phoebe Jevtovic Rosquist, and Celeste Winant, voice) will be joined by Shira Kammen’s zesty, vibrant harp and vielle playing, plus Kit Higginson’s recorder, psaltery, and magic, to illuminate the mystery and wonder of the new year. The program features florid medieval, florid chant of Hildegard von Bingen; early polyphony of St. Martial and Notre Dame; and motets of Machaut and the Ars nova. Join this celebration of new beginnings that hearkens back to the magic of Winter’s light. Festive attire is suggested.

EBRS Twelfth Night party. The January meeting will be a potluck at the Hillside Community Church in El Cerrito. Most of us know where that is and know that it is one of our favorite venues. The doors will open at 3:00 pm with downbeat at 3:30. The ebullient Ms. Shira Kammen will be our conductor. Come prepared to have a very good time with her. We will break for our potluck at 5:30 or so and I am sure we will eat very well indeed. Please visit our “Join Us!” page for our membership form. But if you wish to attend for a first time as a non-member, it is free (with a $10 charge for addtional monthly meetings thereafter until you join).

Come hear the Cantata Collective and two of the Bay Area’s most popular singers, Tonia D’Amelio and Nikolas Nackley, in the Bach “Dialogue” Cantatas Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen BWV 32 and Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen BWV 49.The Dialogue cantatas, with the soprano representing the Soul and the bass representing Jesus, were Bach’s versions of “mini-operas”, full of passion and longing expressed with the word Verlangen. Catherine Turocy, Baroque Dance
“Bach in Time” Public workshop led by the nation’s foremost baroque dance expert and founder of New York Baroque Dance Company. Participants will to dance to the music of J.S. Bach, accompanied by a violinist, harpsichordist, and cellist from Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale. In Bach’s time, musicians and their audiences would have been familiar with dances that comprised the 18th-century French dance suite. (Bach himself knew at least three former dance masters of King Louis XIV of France!) Today’s musicians find that the more they learn about baroque dance, the more easily they can interpret music that was based on baroque dance forms—including many of J.S. Bach’s compositions. The meter and quality of a dance can inform the modern player’s decisions about tempo, articulation, phrasing, bowings, and ornamentation. Early music enthusiasts are warmly invited to participate in this workshop about dances that inspired Bach’s music, performed on instruments from Bach’s time. No previous dance experience is required. Dancing is not mandatory, but if you would like to dance, please wear comfortable clothing and dancing shoes (if you have them). Powdered wigs are not necessary.
