Early Music Open Mic Night
Join us for the first Early Music Open Mic Night in the East Bay. This is your opportunity to perform early music in a friendly cabaret style setting. Instrumentalists, singers, soloists, groups, students, youngsters, professionals — all are welcome! Please email [email protected] with the date you’d like to perform. Time slots will be up to 15 minutes, and there will be six time slots on each night. A Roland state of the art harpsichord/organ will be available on site as well as a regular piano. Food and drinks will be provided.

Albany Consort
The Albany Consort is celebrating Bach’s Birthday! We only need a flimsy excuse to perform Bach’s music, and the great composer’s birthday definitely qualifies. Our program features two of his most stunning virtuoso concertos: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, with its extended harpsichord cadenza, and the brilliant Violin Concerto in E Major. Completing the full program we include three sets of variations: Purcell’s Chaconne in g minor, Geminiani’s La Follia and Muffat’s Ciacona. For this occasion, the Albany Consort consists of Jonathan Salzedo, harpsichord; Marion Rubinstein, voice flute/organ; Laura Rubinstein-Salzedo, Caitlin Cribbs, Holly Piccoli, Katie Hagen violin/viola; Frédéric Rosselet, cello; and Roy Whelden, violone.

Barefoot Chamber Concerts
“Haydn’s The Seven Last Words for Easter” The New Esterházy Quartet (Lisa Weiss and Kati Kyme, violins; Anthony Martin, viola; and William Skeen, cello) give a special performance of Franz Joseph Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ With homilies read by Dean Emeritus Alan Jones of Grace Cathedral. Commissioned in 1783 for the Good Friday service in the Oratorio de la Sancta Cueva in Cadiz, Haydn’s Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze has no parallel in the string quartet repertoire. The work consists of a prelude, then seven slow movements, each written to correspond to one of the seven last words of Jesus Christ on the cross, and finally, a musical depiction of an earthquake. In keeping with the original performance, the music is separated by brief readings reflecting the words Christ spoke. Following the practice of the original performance, the event will start at 10 PM. Seven candles will be lit. At the conclusion of each section, a candle will be extinguished and the event will conclude in darkness.

St. Paul’s Choir, David Farr, Director
St. Paul’s Choir performs J.S. Bach’s St. John’s Passion, rarely performed outside the concert hall, as part of its Good Friday liturgy, with The Rev. Mauricio J. Wilson as celebrant, David Farr, conductor. The Good Friday service at St. Paul’s will present the entire work, with choir, soloists, and chamber orchestra. The congregation will sing the chorales, as they did in Bach’s time. BCP Rite I, with veneration of the cross. Soloists include Joshua Black, Evangelist; Tonia D’Amelio, soprano; Frankie Mansfield, Alto; Kyle Stegall, tenor; Paul Tavernier, baritone; and Philip Saunders, bass. Baroque instrumentalists include members of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, led by Elizabeth Blumenstock, concertmaster.
