KQED and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale
“PBO SESSIONS—Female Composers and the Women Who Bring Their Music to Life” Led by KQED’s Rachael Myrow and hosted by KDFC’s Dianne Nicolini, PBO conductor Nicholas McGegan will explore the role of female composers, musicians, and female arts broadcasters in today’s classical music world with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw and Sally Beamish. The 90-minute program will include an in-depth, sociopolitical and historical look at women and music, including multimedia presentations and performances of new works by Shaw and Beamish, as well as performances of music written by female composers of the Baroque era. The program will feature the Orchestra and star guest artists contralto Avery Amereau and soprano Mary Bevan. Following the program, join the musicians for conversation and complimentary refreshments. Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw has written two pieces for PBO in the past year and collaborates regularly with major orchestras and hip-hop artist Kanye West. Scottish composer and violist Sally Beamish recently composed The Judas Passion, a co-commission of Philharmonia and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) in London. Avery Amereau is a rising star contralto who made her Metropolitan Opera debut last year and British soprano Mary Bevan is a winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist award and UK Critics’ Circle Award for Exceptional Young Talent in music.

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church Third Sunday Concert Series
Derek Tam (harpsichord) and Erik Andersen (baroque cello) offer a concert of Italian Baroque music. In demand as a conductor and historical keyboardist, Derek Tam performs regularly in the Bay Area and elsewhere A founding member and the harpsichordist of MUSA, a San Francisco-based Baroque ensemble, Derek has also served as principal keyboardist for the symphonies of Merced, Modesto, Napa Valley, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz. He currently serves as the Director of Music at First Congregational Church of Berkeley. He is also Music Director of the Berkeley Community Chorus Chamber Singers. Erik Andersen, newly arrived in the Bay Area, is a graduate of the Aaron Copland School of Music at the City University of New York where he completed studies in modern cello under the direction of Marcy Rosen and additional studies under Iris Jortner, Marta Bedkowska, and in historical performance with Lisa Terry. At home on both the modern and baroque cello as well as viola da gamba, he performs with the San Francisco-based early music ensemble HIP Forum.
