Barefoot Chamber Concerts
“Diversimodè Accordata: scordatura music of Heinrich Biber” Pluribus Fidibus (Carla Moore and David Wilson, violins; John Dornenburg, viola da gamba; and Yuko Tanaka, harpsichord) perform a concert of Biber’s sonatas and toccatas By H.I.F. Biber.
Scordatura (non-standard tuning) changes the sound of the instrument, the way it’s played, and even what the instrument is capable of doing. Biber, the foremost violinist of his time, produced a whole repertoire for scordatura violin of unparalleled power and beauty, typified by his 1676 Rosary Sonatas—a sonata for each of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary, each in a different tuning. The program features two of these sonatas, “The Visitation” and “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.”
What could be more awesome than sonatas for scordatura violin and continuo? Why, trio sonatas for TWO scordatura violins and continuo, of course! In 1696 Biber published a volume titled “Harmonia Artificioso – Ariosa Diversimodè Accordata” (Artificial Harmony: Pieces in Various Tunings), which includes seven suites for two stringed instruments and bass in various tunings. This program features three of these remarkable suites.
