Music for Queens & Kings
The San Francisco chapter of the ARS (SFRS) announces its (lucky) thirteenth annual workshop day for recorders of all sizes, “Game of Thrones—Music for Queens & Kings. The workshop, directed by Louise Carslake and Hanneke van Proosdij, will take place Saturday, February 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Christ Church Lutheran, 1090 Quintara Street (at 20th Avenue) in San Francisco.
Most of us don’t mind paying for the art and music that enrich our lives so greatly. This is nothing new. For composers, such as Byrd, Dowland, Binchois, Dufay, and countless others, it was patrons of means—whether wealthy individuals, the Church or the Court—who kept these artists in business, thus allowing them to live by their art.
Of course, the music was composed to please the patrons, but now, it also delights us. At this year’s SFRS workshop we will get to experience music that was written for Queens and Kings of Europe. Each class will experience music from different courts that our composers served.
Please join us for a day of glorious music in the heart of San Francisco’s Sunset District, where directors Louise Carslake and Hanneke van Proosdij will present music for royalty composed by the aforementioned composers as well as Busnois, Charpentier, Dowland, Charpentier, Lassus, Marais, de Monte, du Mont, van Ghizeghem, and Schütz.
The San Francisco Recorder Society Workshop is known for being particularly open to those who may never have attended a music workshop in the past with sessions organized for players of differing skill levels, from low-intermediate to advanced players. If you have friends who play, or students who have been hesitant to attend a workshop for fear of not being “ready” please encourage them to join you at this event. There will be lots of friendly players who will gladly sit next to the newcomers and guide them through the music and the day. Registration is now open! (Download PDF) The fee is $47 which includes all the music. Refreshments will be provided, but bring your own lunch, as there are no convenient restaurants in the immediate area. There is a kitchen available for refrigeration and warming of your food. Street parking and limited garage parking is available. The church is also accessible by public transit: it’s on the 28, and 66 bus lines and three blocks north of the L Taraval streetcar line. All areas of the church are wheelchair accessible.
